Lambton Wildlife Inc. was established in 1966, with the purpose of bringing those with a love of nature together in a setting to foster learning and enjoyment.

Dragonflies and Damselflies (and Butterflies)

When: June 20th 2009
Meet: 8:30am Bright's Grove Plaza (near Shoppers Drugs).

The LWI managed Pork Franks Forested Dunes property is a great place to find these beautiful insects. Come and see what these areas are like and what types of insects (i.e. dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and myriad of other small insects) live here. Bring a lunch and lots of water. Heat brings them out. Robert may decide to go to a more productive place.

Annual Pinery & North Lambton Butterfly Count

When: June 27th 2009 (Heavy Rain Date: June 28th)
Meet: Pinery Visitor Centre at 8:30 am (report at the gate that you are doing the Butterfly Count).

No experience is really needed to help. We will partner you with knowledgeable guide. All participants are charged a $5 fee (same as Christmas bird count) which goes to the North American Butterfly Association to help with the conservation of butterflies. Lunch is provided by the Friends of the Pinery. The count ends at 4:30, but you may leave before then. If you can borrow a net, great, but we will have extras. This is a great way to learn about butterflies from an expert.

Butterflies of the Howard Watson Nature Trail

When: July 12th 2009
Meet: 2:00 pm at the Modeland and Cathcart Trail entrance.

This is a new event, held jointly with the Sydenham Field Naturalists.

Tour of Rural Lambton Stewardship Network Seed Stock Fields and Woodland Tour at the Sinclair Property of the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority.

When: Aug 23rd 2009
Meet: 2:00 pm, at the Sinclair property, on the east side of Downie Road, south of Bentpath Line (County Road #2), north of Bilton
Line, former Township of Euphemia, or at 1:15 pm at the St. Clair High School parking lot on Murphy Rd., south of Wellington.

Everything will be blooming where the RLSN grows the seed stock for their massive tall grass prairie rehabilitation projects.

Nature Tour of Stag Island

When: Sep 19th 2009
Meet: Meet at 12:15pm at the foot of Hill St. in Corunna for the 12:30pm ferry ($1.00 fee)

This is a rare opportunity to tour the remarkable natural features of this privately owned island. Tour leader will be John Barker of
the Stag Island Environmental Committee. This will be about a 3 hour visit. Maximum group size is 15.

Nature Walk at the Lorne C. Henderson Conservation Area in Petrolia - “A great family outing!”

When: Sep 26th 2009
Meet: Car pooling at St. Clair High School at 9:30am or 10:00am at the C.A. which is on the south side of Petrolia Line (County Road 4) just west of Petrolia.

A pizza lunch will be provided by LWI.

Fungi Foray

When: Oct 4th 2009
Meet: 8:30 am at Bright's Grove Plaza (near Shoppers Drugs).

Enjoy a pleasant fall walk to learn about interesting and beautiful fungi. Peter usually explores the Lambton County Heritage Forest in Port Franks, but may go where he thinks it is more productive Lunch at McPhersons. If the conditions are right this is a full day event, but people can leave earlier.

Nature Walks in Conservation Areas along Bickford Line

When: Oct 10th 2009
Meet: 9am at the St. Clair High School or 10am at the parking lot of the Moore Wildlife Area, which is on the north side of Bickford line, 1k east of Kimball Rd. (County Rd. 31)

Birding the Lake Huron Flyway

When: Oct 31st 2009
Meet: 8am at Point Edward Lighthouse (end of Fort Street)

Starting at the Point Edward Lighthouse and ending at Kettle Point. This is a full day which combines previously separate outings. Lunch at a local restaurant.

Birding Niagara

When:Nov 28th 2009
Meet: car pool from Sarnia or meet at Van Wagner's Beach, Stoney Creek at 7:30 am.

We will be searching for uncommon to rare gulls and ducks which concentrate in the Niagara Gorge, from above the falls to Niagara on the Lake and along the Lake Ontario shore.

Christmas Bird Count

Register with Peter Chapman well ahead if you want to participate so he can arrange coverage for the territories. participants will meet in the Pinery afterwards for result tallies and refreshments.

Bickford Oak Woods Beaver Swamp Tour

When: Jan 30th 2010
Meet: 9:30am St. Clair High School or 10am at the Bickford Oak Woods

This is a joint event with Sydenham Field Naturalists. Clean out Wood duck boxes, stroll through Button Bush/Beaver Swamp, under the Heron rookery. Snowshoes an asset if snow is deep.

Meet: 9am at the Dow People Place parking lot (north of McLean Centre).

Guest speaker is Phil Roberts, well known nature commentor on CBC Windsor . He will speak on the Bald Eagle Satellite Telemetry program for Eagle nestings by the Detroit River.

 Ontario Nature’s 2009 Annual General Meeting

When: May 30th, 2009

Bruce County museum in Southampton, in partnership with the Huron Fringe Birding Festival. The Birding Festival runs May 22nd to May 31st and is a program of the Friends of McGregor Point Park. See their website (www.friendsofmacgregor.org) to register for the Birding Festival and the Ontario Nature A.G.M.

Carolinian Canada Annual General Meeting: 25th Anniversary

When: May 8th, 2009

Hosted by Conservation Ontario in Ancaster. Theme is Water is Life . Field Trip and guest speaker.

Lambton Wildlife Annual General Meeting & Banquet

Business meeting and elections at 4:30, bucket draw opens at 5:00, with the delicious turkey dinner, with homemade fruit pies, to be served at 6:00 pm. Guest speaker will be Winnifred Wake of the McIlwraith Field Naturalists of London, talking about Chimney Swifts, mysterious little birds in big trouble...a threatened species. Winnifred was the force behind the amazing project in London to learn more about nesting and roosting habitat of Chimney Swifts: Swift Watch.

 Big Birding Day Across Canada  

When: Sep 28th, 2009

Paul Pratt, head naturalist of the City of Windsor's Ojibway Nature Centre, has taken part in major birding events around North America, which have included victories at the World Series of Birding, Great Texas Birding Classic and setting a new North American big day record in 2001 and Canadian record in 2006. Paul will describe the thrill of Big Day Birding activities across Canada.

 A Changing Climate: Implications for the Carolinian Canada Ecoregion 

When: Oct 30th, 2009

Gordon McBean, former Chair of the Joint Scientific Committee for the World Climate Research Program, has a long involvement in climate change studies as a scientist, professor and manager. He will provide a global context of climate change and global response strategies and how the climate is projected to change in the Carolinian region, and some response possibilities.

 Frogs and Kin

When: Nov 30th, 2009

Scott Gillingswater, species at risk biologist for the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, will talk about the amphibians of Ontario and their survival status in the face of ongoing habitat losses. Our Young Naturalists will present a short performance about frogs as part of the evening program.

 Bluewater Bridge Peregrines

When: Jan 25th, 2010

The Bird Lady , university professor Kariann Reno, from Detroit, will bring us up to date on the success of the Peregrine Falcon nesting program on the Bluewater Bridge. She will review Falcon biology and the recent history of the Falcons in view of environmental pressures.

 Rare Woody Plants of Ontario

When: Feb 22nd, 2010

Sean Fox, Arboretum Manager, University of Guelph Arboretum, will talk about the threatened and endangered trees and shrubs in Ontario, particularly in Southern Ontario. The Arboretum has a number of significant projects, including a mature seed orchard and an extensive gene bank. There is a lot of discussion about protecting endangered animals, but they rely on the health of the habitat provided by trees and shrubs.

Front Yard Gardens: Growing More Than Grass

When: Mar 29th, 2010

Liz Primeau, the highly respected and well known author of numerous books on gardening, including the best seller Front Yard Gardens, founding editor of Canadian Gardening magazine and the former host of Canadian Gardening Television on HGTV, will be our speaker. She has long been the leader of the turf the turf movement. She preaches the mantra of biodiversity and the beneficial transformation that occurs when you replace an expanse of lawn with plants that attract birds & butterflies.
