Lambton Wildlife Members Win the Botham Cup May 2010

Larry Cornelis and Paul Carter won the annual Botham Cup at Pelee Island during the special event “Springsong: A Celebration of Birds and Birding”. The Botham Cup bird race is a race between teams to compete for the most birds sighted within a 24-hr period. Stewart McLean and his CBC entourage followed Larry and Paul for the whole day. Stewart then used the material for his regular show. The honour was received at the "Springsong Banquet" sponsored annually by Margaret Atwood.

Hogweed Removed
Lambton Wildlife Inc. has removed a confirmed giant hogweed from a north Sarnia home. Volunteers from the 44 year old non-profit organization wore safety gear and protective goggles while cutting down the three metre noxious weed and digging up its roots. The plant, an invasive species that can cause a severe rash, was growing in the backyard of a home on Amesbury Court.

A Report From Moosonee

Moosonee is a small town in northern Ontario in the Hudson Bay Lowlands. Wetlands are the predominant vegetation type and there are lots of black spruce, many alders, and other small bushes. Moosonee is located right on the Moose River near the coast of James Bay.

There is no road connection with the rest of Ontario so the only way to get here is by train or plane. I hope to give you a taste of the north with my birding and nature reports and maybe even a longing to visit northern Ontario.

The first thing I observed since arriving here is all the breeding birds around my yard. My yard list now stands at 40 and I've only been here for roughly three weeks. Highlights in my yard have been Gray Jay, which is now visiting the bird feeder regularly. Also I've had many breeding warblers such as Yellow Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, and Northern Waterthrush. It's been a pleasure watching birds feeding young in the yard, including Yellow Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Purple Finch, White-throated Sparrow and just today a Fox Sparrow came around with young. This has been really interesting as I don't usually get to see these birds with young. Another thing I have observed at this summer time of year is winter finches like Common Redpoll and White-winged Crossbill. For a nice surprise, there are a few Bohemian Waxwings here and there.

I will be trying to sent reports once a month so stayed tuned for my next report. For now, let's get out and go bird.

LWI displays at Hobbyfest
Lambton Wildlife Inc members manned our display at this year's Hobbyfest. The festival took place at Dow People Place under the shade of the trees on July 25. About 50 community groups and organizations participated, covering a wide variety of hobby and leisure activities. It was an opportunity for LWI members to interact with the community and share with them what we do.

Volunteers who staffed the display said there was a great turnout and enjoyed answering the numerous nature questions and listening to nature stories that members of the community shared.
