Polar Bears: Rulers of the North

Monday Feb. 27, Lambton Wildlife is hosting a presentation on Polar Bears: Rulers of the North. These animals are the largest land predator in the world and our speaker, Roberta Buchanan, will tell us about the behaviour of these magnificent animals in their natural habitat as they gather to await the formation of sea ice near Churchill, Manitoba. The spectacular photography of Mark Buchanan will be featured. All are welcome! YMCA Learning Centre, 660 Oakdale Ave, Sarnia @ 7:00 pm. Next month's presentation is by Larry Cornelis on the Importance of Forests on Monday, March 27.

Mandaumin Woods Nature Reserve 50th Celebration

On May 1, Lambton Wildlife Inc. celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the purchase of Mandaumin Woods Nature Reserve. Roberta Buchanan, property manager for the reserve, welcomed more than 75 people to the celebration and introduced Gerry Clements, one of the founding members of Lambton Wildlife. Gerry spoke about the purchase of the property and the importance of preserving natural spaces in Lambton County. Four expert naturalists took groups along the reserve’s trail to look at wildflowers, trees, and birds. Lambton Wildlife Inc. needs volunteers to plant trees at Mandaumin Woods Nature Reserve, October 18, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. (Rain Date: October 24) Please wear long pants, work gloves, closed toed shoes, and bring your own mask to wear in the event that social distancing is not possible. We will be planting trees and due to COVID-19 sharing shovels is not permitted, therefore please bring your own shovel. Almost 50 LWI members and friends joined leader Mike Kent today for a fascinating morning hike learning about mushrooms along the Lambton Heritage Forest trail. A beautiful sunny sky accented the fall colours along the route while Mike provided detailed information about various fungi which could be observed less than a meter from the trail. Binoculars and field guides were provided to help participants identify the mushrooms. Mike made the event fun while also being extremely informative; there was something for everyone: from mushroom novices all the way to fungi aficionados. Bear Creek Paddle – June 2

What a beautiful day for a paddle! The weather looked threatening but by 9:30 it had cleared up and the sun even came out. We began our paddle at the Wilkesport Boat launch and a few minutes after leaving we were lucky enough to see a muskrat swimming along the shore. Where the Sydenham splits into Bear and Black Creek we stopped and talked about the numerous species that can be seen along, and in, the river – several of which we were lucky enough to see on our paddle.
