Karner Blue BioBlitz

You’re invited to the Karner Blue BioBlitz this August 10th, 2019 at the Karner Blue Sanctuary in Port Franks Ontario. Please RSVP

LWI is organizing a one day survey to identify as many species as possible at the Karner Blue Sanctuary. Everyone is welcome, from experts to amateurs, and those who just want to learn.  As owners and stewards of the property, we are aiming to renew our interest and stewardship our property and update the current management plan. A BioBlitz is an exciting and scientific way to do an inventory of all species in at a rare and unique property while bringing together taxonomic experts, citizen scientists, and club members.

Dinner: Mid-afternoon convene at a local restaurant to discuss interesting finds or dinnertime potluck

About the Karner Blue Sanctuary:

“This dry oak-pine woodland is currently ranked by the NHIC as S1, extremely rare in Ontario. Until the late 1980’s this was the home of the Karner blue butterfly. The most notable flower is the wild lupine. Also found here are pipsissewa, large-leaved shinleaf, round-leaved pyrola, prairie ragwort, thyme-leaved sandwort, lyre-leaved rock cress, bearberry, plains puccoon, rough blazing star, cylindric blazing star and butterfly weed. Shrubs include New Jersey tea and narrow-leaved New Jersey tea. Sand-loving Icland lichen is found in “the bowl” and rough fruited panic grass is beside the path. This 15 ha oak savannah (a threatened ecosystem) is a part of the Port Franks Wetlands and Forested Dunes Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI). These lands were purchased in 1988 to protect the last remaining colony of Karner Blue Butterflies in Canada. Despite these efforts, the butterfly was extirpated by 1991.”
